Landrum, Della Vecchia Carry Spartans to Sweep of Staten Island

Staten Island, N.Y. - Commanding pitching performances by Abbie Landrum and Carissa Della Vecchia powered St. Thomas Aquinas College to 7-1 and 7-0 wins and a doubleheader sweep of host College of Staten Island today in East Coast Conference softball action.

The wins upped STAC's overall record to 24-15-1 and 11-4-1 in the ECC while CSI fell to 11-35 and 3-15 in conference play.

Landrum was the star of the day for the Spartans. The sophomore righty tossed a dominant one-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks to lift her record to 9-8. She also helped her own cause with two hits and two RBI. The STAC offense accumulated 10 hits led by a pair of freshmen. Adriana Coira had three hits and three runs scored and Elyse Marcano finished with two hits and two RBI.

In the other game, Landrum homered in the first inning to support Della Vecchia, who increased her record to 14-3 with a five-hitter and 13 strikeouts. STAC broke open the game with a five-run outburst in the second inning. Coira's double scored Emilie Olivier and Nyla Sapia. Marcano followed with a two-run single and Tara Hagan drove in the fifth tally of the frame. Hagan and Amanda Demmerle finished with two hits each.

STAC next travels to Molloy University on Tuesday (April 25) in ECC play that begins at 3 p.m. The teams will first resume the suspended game on April 4 that was stopped after eight innings due to darkness, with the score tied 1-1. The teams will then play a regularly scheduled doubleheader.
