STAC Men's Soccer Earns 1-1 Draw at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on the road against Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field in Westchester County.

STAC moves to 4-4-4 overall and 0-2-3 in the ECC, while Mercy goes to 9-2-2 and 4-1-1 in conference play.

Neither team could muster a goal in the first half, despite the teams combining for 21 shots (11 STAC/10 Mercy) in the opening 45 minutes of action.

Following the break, it only took 3:42 of play for the hosts to get onto the scoreboard, as the Mavericks were awarded a penalty kick by the officiating crew. Vasco Baptista would get the honor of taking the PK and would fire a strike past the diving STAC keeper, Tabor McDaniels to make it 1-0.

Back and forth action between the squads would continue, until STAC would get their chance to even the score on a penalty kick of their own in the 81st minute. Jorge Umana would be tasked with trying to tie things up at 1-1 and would be successful on his attempt, blasting a laser past Mercy keeper Eirik Elvestad and to the back of the net.

The Spartans and Mavericks would earn several opportunities to break the stalemate in the final nine minutes of action, but neither team could solve the other's keeper and time would run out on the match.
