Roberts Wesleyan Men and Women Claim Fifth-Straight ECC XC Championships

Rochester, N.Y. - For the fifth year in a row, Roberts Wesleyan's men's and women's teams claimed the East Coast Conference Cross Country Championships.

The Redhawks dominated the women's race with their top five finishers crossing first to claim the first 15 points to secure their fifth straight ECC title.  Ashley Watson led the pack with a time of 19:02.3 to earn ECC Runner of the Year honors.  Teammates Brittany Shumway, Gostomski twins, Abigail and Bailey and Michaela Bierly rounding out the top five.  Abigail Gostomski nabbed Rookie of the Year honors, narrowly besting her sister with a time of 19:18.4.

Roberts Wesleyan had the first eight finishers, with Irene Chepteling of NYIT and Rebecca MacLeod of St. Thomas Aquinas rounding out the top ten. 

St. Thomas Aquinas claimed a second place finish with a total of 66 points and LIU Post took third place with 104 points.  

Junior nursing major and ECC First Teamer, Moriah Martone earned the Elite 19 award which is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA. Martone holds a 4.0 at Roberts.

With a total of 21 points on the day, the Roberts Men's team had their top five place second through fifth and seventh to once again claim their respective title.  Junior Redhawk, Christopher Sims grabbed a second place finish with a time of 26:08.2 to lead the team, followed by Josiah Ottolini, Shane Pease, Nathan Cannon and Anthony Casullo who all earned team points for Roberts.  Pease was the top freshman finisher, crossing the line in 26:20.9 to earn Rookie of the Year honors.

NYIT's Noah Simatei claimed the ECC Runner of the Year title with a pace of 5:12, finishing the men's 8K race, leading all runners with a time of 25:48.9.  Aidan Russell of St. Thomas Aquinas along with Redhawks' Anthony Casullo, James Betts and Tyler Lipina and Daemen Wildcat Michael Swiniarski rounded out the top 10.

St. Thomas Aquinas also took second on the men's side, finishing with 64 points and Molloy placed third with 105 points.

Sophomore biochemistry major Tyler Lipina earned the Elite 19 award which is awarded to the student-athlete with the highest GPA. Lipina holds a 4.0 at Roberts.

Roberts Wesleyan's Head Coaches Andrew Dorr, was named the Men's and Women's ECC Coach of the Year after leading the Redhawks to a first place finish in each race. This is the sixth consecutive year he has won the honor for both genders and the seventh straight year in the women's race.
