Old Westbury, N.Y. – NYIT Athletics is
pleased to announce the appointment of alum and former track
member, Lenroy Raffington (B.S. ’95) as the head coach for
the men’s and women’s cross country teams.
Raffington brings strong experience with high school track as
Hempstead High School’s head coach since 1998. He revived the
girls’ varsity track team after a five-year break in the
program.
During his term at the high school, Raffington won four consecutive
outdoor division championships from 2003-2006. He was consecutively
named Nassau County Track and Field Girls Track Coach of the Year
from 2002 until 2005 by the Nassau County Coaches Association.
Raffington led 29 new school records and three New York State
Public High School Athletic Association records. He produced seven
Female Athletes of the Year, 39 High School All-Americans, 79
All-State honorees, 131 All-County awardees, 86 All-Conference
recipients, and 85 All-Division selections. In 2009, Raffington was
cited as Newsday’s High School Girl’s Coach of the
Year.
Raffington earned his Bachelor’s of Science degree in
Business Administration from NYIT in 1995. In 2003, he was
certified by New York State as a teacher’s assistant and
continued his career as a coach, mentor, and educator.
Alongside Raffingtion is newly appointed assistant coach and former
NYIT track and field coach, Peter A. Zinno. Zinno brings 40 years
of coaching experience back to NYIT in addition to five NCAA
Championships. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree
in Education/Social Science from St. John’s University, a
Master’s Degree in American Government and
Politics-International Relations, and also a Master of Public
Administration degree from NYU. During his time at NYIT, Zinno sent
several runners to the Olympic Games in 1980, 1988, 1992, and in
2000. He has coached over 300 NCAA Division ll All-Americans and
over 100 Individual NCAA Champions.
The Bears open the 2014 season at the Fordham Invite on Saturday,
Sept. 6 at Van Courtland Park.
