Molloy Sweeps Mercy to Return to ECC Title Game for Third-Straight Season

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The top-seeded Molloy volleyball team will return to the East Coast Conference Championship Game for the third consecutive season after defeating No. 4 Mercy College, 3-0, this evening at Quealy Gymnasium.  Molloy will host No. 2 University of Bridgeport tomorrow (Nov. 23) at 7:00 p.m. to crown the 2019 Champion.

How it Happened

  • The Mavericks took an early 3-0 lead, but a six-point run for the Lions put the home team in front, 16-6, including two service aces from freshman Brynne Winkelman
  • Molloy would extend its lead to 23-10 before claiming the first set victory.
  • A seven-point run, featuring three kills from redshirt senior Carly Banks, gave the maroon and white an early 8-2 advantage. 
  • Mercy would bridge the gap to five, 13-8, but was unable to overcome the deficit. 
  • Banks added two kills in a six-point run to start the third set with Molloy in front, 6-1. 
  • Back-to-back aces from junior Kacey Affrunti helped the Lions increase its lead to as much as 22-9 on the way to the set and match victory to return to the title contest. 


Top Performances

  • Banks topped the scoresheet with 13 kills while senior Hailey Wehr added nine.
  • Three members of the maroon and white finished with double-digit dig efforts, led by 17 from sophomore Kathleen Doherty. Senior Jessica Fischetti added 16 while Winkelman recorded 12. 
  • Senior Sophia Smith tallied 35 assists to go with three service aces while freshman Chye Davis put up three blocks.
