Central Islip, N.Y. – The field for the
2014 East Coast Conference Volleyball Championship is set with play
to commence on Friday, November 14 on the campus of two-time
defending ECC Champion, the University of Bridgeport.
Hosting duties and home court advantage for the tournament goes to
the ECC Regular Season Champions, Bridgeport. The Purple Knights
won their third straight regular season crown by sweeping through
conference play with a perfect 16-0 record. This is the first time
a school has gone undefeated through the regular season since
Dowling pulled the trick in the 2008 season.
In another first since the 2008 season, the four team tournament
will include a school other than Bridgeport, Dowling, LIU Post, and
NYIT. Roberts Wesleyan, who finished 10-6 in ECC play, breaks into
the field as the No. 4 seed in their first season eligible to make
the conference tournament. The Redhawks would have made the
conference championship in their first season in the ECC in 2012,
but were ineligible as they made the transition to full NCAA
Division II membership.
In their regular season matches, the Purple Knights defeated
Roberts Wesleyan both times, but in the previous matchup at
Bridgeport, the Redhawks extended the match to five sets before
falling.
The other semifinal pits No. 3 seed LIU Post against No. 2 seed
Dowling. The Pioneers finished with an 11-5 mark in ECC play, while
Dowling was 13-3. This is the first meeting between the two schools
in ECC Championship play since the 2011 season. Dowling won that
match 3-0.
This season, the two schools split their two matchups with each
team winning on their home court.
The tournament will start on Friday, November 14 with the Roberts
Wesleyan vs. Bridgeport matchup at 5:00 p.m. LIU Post vs. Dowling
will follow at 7:30 p.m. The winners of the semifinal matchups will
move on to the final on Saturday, November 15 at 8:00 p.m.
