Lexington, Ky. - Eight volleyball
student-athletes from the East Coast Conference have been named to
the American Volleyball Coaches Association NCAA Division II
All-East Region team. Seven earned All-Region status while one was
named to the Honorable Mention list. University of Bridgeport Head
Coach, Leo Uzcategui, was also named the East Region Coach of the
Year.
Bridgeport tops the East Region with four standouts named to the
All-Region squad. ECC Player of the Year, Biljana Savic, is joined
by teammates Larissa Oliveira, Sarah Rosa, and Ying Shen. Oliveira
and Savic, both juniors, have now earned three straight AVCA
All-Region selections. Shen is also a multiple year All-Region
honoree, earning her second straight selection.
NYIT was also well represented with three players, Shelby Cable,
Savanna Donarski, and Marija Jovanovic, on the All-Region squad.
Four-time ECC All-Conference First Team pick, Cable, joins Oliveira
and Savic as a three-time AVCA All-Region honoree. Donarksi was
included for the second straight year while Jovanovic earns her
first All-Region selection.
Another Bear, Kelly Brown, was also selected to the Honorable
Mention portion of the team.
Bridgeport Head Coach, Leo Uzcategui, guided the Purple Knights to
another outstanding season. This year marks the sixth consecutive
NCAA appearance after advancing to the NCAA East Regional Final a
year ago. The Purple Knights took home their second consecutive
East Coast Conference Championship and are currently riding a
15-match winning streak. Bridgeport enters the tournament ranked
first in the conference in kills per set (12.94), hitting
percentage (.268), assists per set (11.82) and points per set
(16.8). This is Uzcategui's third AVCA Region Coach of the Year
award after winning in 2009 and 2011.
