West Babylon, N.Y. - A pair of Queens College standouts took home top billing when the East Coast Conference announced its Women's Tennis All-Conference selections on Friday afternoon. Senior Luisa Auffarth (Butjadingen, Germany) and freshman Maja Makal (Poland) gave the Knights a sweep of the league's top awards, winning Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year, respectively.
Auffarth has been nearly unbeatable at the No. 1 spot for the Knights. She enters ECC Championship play with a singles record of 14-2. Auffarth is a perfect 8-0 in dual matches, which includes a 5-0 mark in ECC play. She also has a mark of 6-2 in tournaments, with both losses coming deep in the tournament. She fell in the semifinals of the ITA East Region Championship and also lost in the final of the Hofstra Invitational where she went 3-1 against Division I competition. In addition, she added an 8-3 record in doubles play. Once again she was unbeaten in ECC matches, posting a 4-0 record at No. 1 doubles.
Makal was just as outstanding in her collegiate debut. The freshman from Poland is 14-4 on the year to date. Six of her 14 wins came on the way to winning the ITA East Region Championship. Like Auffarth, Makal was unbeaten in dual and ECC matches, compiling marks of 7-0 overall and 5-0 in ECC contests all at the No. 2 position. Makal was tough to beat in doubles, as well, finishing 6-0 (4-0) at the No. 1 spot in dual matches.
University of the District of Columbia head coach, T. Richard (Dickie) Mahaffey, III was selected by his peers as the ECC Coach of the Year. Mahaffey earns the honor for the second time in his career, after also doing so in 2012. Under his guidance, the Firebirds posted a 10-1 record (4-1 ECC) to earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ECC Championship.
