Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College women's
tennis team set up a rematch of last year's East Coast Conference
championship by disposing of the University of the District of
Columbia, 6-0, in a match played at Queens College in Flushing on
Friday afternoon. The Knights will face top-seeded NYIT in
the final.
QC opened the match by picking up all three points in doubles
competition. The team of Aylin Mehter and Jennifer Fridman
opened play with an 8-0 win over Maxime Duijst and Peerad
Looareesuwan. From there, Weronika Kurka and Jenna Plevako
disposed of Tamara Kenia and Jessica Nunez, 8-3. Finally, the
combination of Anna Rodionova and Andrea Samson triumphed over
Sofia Leon and Alicia Gallard, 8-6.
The Knights entered singles play needing only three points to take
the match. Darby Brandon picked up the first of the three
points with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sofia Leon. Rodionova
gave QC their fifth point with a 6-4, 7-5 win. Finally,
Queens put the match away when Jenna Plevako won her match over
Tamara Kenia, 6-0, 6-1.
The Knights improved to 11-1 on the season and will face NYIT in
the championship on Saturday at 11:00 AM in Flushing. The
Bears handed Queens their only loss of the year, when the two sides
met earlier in 2013.
