Flushing, N.Y. - In a rematch of last year's
East Coast Conference finals, No. 2 seeded NYIT women's tennis
defeated No. 3 seed District of Columbia 5-0 Friday afternoon in
the ECC semifinals, hosted by Queens (N.Y.). With the win, the
Bears improved to 10-1 on the season.
NYIT advances to the ECC final on Saturday, Oct. 6 against host
Queens (N.Y.). First serve is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Bears were victorious at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by identical
scores of 8-3. The Firebirds had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match
due to an insufficient lineup. Leading 4-0 after forfeiting the No.
6 singles match, graduate student Nelly Ciolkowski
(Neuilly-Plaisance, France) topped Jessica Nunez 6-0, 6-0 to clinch
the 5-0 match win.
Ciolkowski also won at first doubles with Rocio Benavent (Valencia,
Spain), while Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain) and Madalina Florea
(Galati, Romania) earned a point at second doubles.
