Central Islip, N.Y. - The Queens College
women’s tennis team has been selected by the
conference’s coaches in the 2012 preseason poll to capture
their third East Coast Conference championship in four
seasons. University of the District of Columbia junior
Jessica Nunez (Guayaquil, Ecuador) has been named the Preseason
Player of the Year.
The Knights earned seven out of eight first place votes for a
total of 62 points to take the top spot on the poll. Queens comes
off a 2011 campaign where they finished the season ranked 26th
nationally in the Campbell’s/ITA poll after posting an 18-2
record. Despite the lofty ranking, the Knights failed to win an ECC
title for the first time since 2008. However, Queens went on to
secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Round of
16.
Defending ECC Champion, University of the District of Columbia,
earned the lone remaining first place vote to finish with 56 points
and grab the second spot in the poll. NYIT, coming off a 9-6 season
in 2011-12, rounds out the top three.
Nunez, a two-time All-Conference First Team member, takes home the
Preseason Player of the Year honor. In 2011-12, Nunez posted a 14-6
record, including a perfect 6-0 run in ECC play at the No. 1
singles spot, to help lead the Firebirds to their first ever ECC
title.
