OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – In just its second
year of intercollegiate play, the NYIT women’s tennis team
has advanced to the East Coast Conference Championship match with a
5-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas Tuesday afternoon.
The Bears will travel to Washington, D.C., to face the Firebirds of
University of D.C. in the championship match on Thursday, Oct.
6.
The deciding point was won at No. 3 singles by sophomore Gaby
Rodriguez (Hermosilla-Sonora, Mexico). She defeated Faye Forman
6-0, 6-0. Prior to that freshman Sara Burinato (Barcelona, Spain)
swept Christie Patruno 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot and freshman
Rocio Benavent (Valencia, Spain) downed Kristen Schimpf 6-0, 6-0 at
first singles.
In doubles play, NYIT went 2-1 with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2
spot. Benavent and Melanie Hoffer (Dix Hills, N.Y.) started things
off with an 8-0 blanking at No. 2 doubles. Burinato and Rodriguez
then followed with an 8-0 sweep of Patruno and Forman.
STAC’s lone point came at the No. 3 spot as Samantha Vinci
and Candice Zugibe topped Alexis Tyson (North Babylon, N.Y.) and
Chelseyann Bipat (Nassau, Bahamas) 8-4.
