Mass. – The Queens College women's tennis team,
ranked No. 28 in the most-recent Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) Division II national poll, is through to the NCAA
Division II Championships round of 16, as the top-seeded Knights
earned a 5-1 triumph at fourth-seeded Stonehill in East Region,
second-round play Monday afternoon.
Queens (19-1) will play in the Round of 16 at Altamonte Springs, Fla., on May 11 at 4 p.m., against the winner of the Southeast Regional No. 2 – that victor will be determined Tuesday (May 3) afternoon.
The Knights took two out of three doubles matches from the host Skyhawks (19-4) to start the contest. In the No. 1 flight, Linda Tatala-Colin and Andrea Salvetova took out Lindsey Herchel and Paige Frost by an 8-1 score. Erika Goldsmith and Laura Mocodeanu took out Leah White and Kaitlyn Martin by an 8-3 decision at No. 2, before Stonehill's Amy Toegemann and Chelsea Haedrich won a 9-8 (9-7 tiebreaker) marathon at No. 3 against Queens's Maria Mendes and Taylor Barber.
Queens needed a trio of victories in singles action to seal the team match, and got wins at the No. 2, 5 and 6 flights from Tatala-Colin, Mendes and Salvetova, respectively. Tatala-Colin scored a 6-1, 6-love victory over Toegemann, before Salvetova took out Haedrich, 6-1 and 6-1. Mendes clinched the match for the Knights at No. 5 singles by scoring a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over Martin.
