Knights Claim ECC Women’s Tennis Tournament Title

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queen College Knights claimed a 5-0 victory over Dowling College to capture the 2009 ECC Women's Tennis Championship Title, on October 14.  The Knights improve to 12-0 while the Golden Lions finish their season with a 7-5 record.

The Knights and Golden Lions battled game for game at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles flights.  Somadi Druker (Capetown, South Africa) and Erika Goldsmith (Edison, N.J.) would eventually top Tamiris Diversi (Limeira, Brazil) and Cristina Hoffmann (Floripa, Brazil), 8-6, in No. 1 doubles.  Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Maria Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil) captured an 8-5 win over Diane Kobasiuk (Mastic Beach, N.Y) and Cristina Sousa (Selden, N.Y.) at the No. 2 flight.  Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Kirby Reiss (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) teamed up to claim an 8-0 victory over Dowling's Chanida Monparpunth (Centereach, N.Y.) and Alexa Speyer (Selden, N.Y.) in the No. 3 doubles match to give the Knights a 3-0 edge heading into singles action.

Mendes swept Sousa (6-0, 6-0) at No. 4 singles to tally Queens' fourth win of the day and Druker clinched the match with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Hoffmann in the No. 2 singles play.

The Knights will advance to the NCAA Women's Tennis Championships in May.
