
Central Islip, N.Y. - The Queens College women's tennis teams was a unanimous preseason favorite for the 2009 season as voted on by the league's head coaches. Junior Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, N.Y.) from Queens has been tabbed the Preseason Player of the Year.
The Knights received all first-place votes for a total of 30 points to take the top spot in the poll. Queens finished second in the conference last season with a near perfect 5-1 mark in conference play. The Knights received a bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the East Regional Final where they fell to Stonehill College.
Mocodeanu claimed the ECC No. 2 singles Championship in the 2008. She advanced to the semifinals of Div II ITA Tournament and won two NCAA Tournament matches at the No. 1 singles spot. Mocodeanu amassed a 9-2 overall record at the No. 2 singles position and earned a No. 4 ranking in the east. In doubles play, she and partner Kirby Reiss are ranked 7th in the East.
The East Coast Conference Championships be held at the higher seeds for the semifinal and final rounds. The semifinals will be on Wednesday, October 7 and the finals will be held on Thursday, October 8. For more information visit www.eccsports.org.
