Rockville Centre, N.Y. - The second-seeded Molloy women's soccer team came from behind to defeat seventh-seeded Bridgeport, 2-1, in the NCAA Division II East Regional Quarterfinal this evening at John A. Darcy Field. The Lions improved to 18-2 while the Purple Knights fell to 11-7-2.
How it Happened
- Sophomore Lindsey McCarthy generated the Lions' first scoring chance in the ninth minute, but her header hit off the post.
- In the 17th minute, senior Dana Poetzsch had an opportunity denied by UB keeper Clara Karlson before the first half ended with the game scoreless.
- The Molloy offense came out firing, with junior Lexi Verni forcing Karlson to make two stops in the first two minutes of the second half.
- The Purple Knights took a 1-0 advantage off a goal from Leigh Ann Ramsay, who headed a ball past senior Jackie Carty off a corner feed from Samantha St. Pierre.
- Carty was put to her biggest test of the contest in the 71st minute, as she put up a crucial stop on a penalty kick from Andrea Basilicato.
- Poetzsch knotted the match, 1-1-, in the 76th minute after scoring off a misplay by the Purple Knights' defender.
- Carty kept the match tied after denying a one-on-one opportunity by Olivia Pousette.
- Poetzsch was fouled in the box in the 87th minute, giving the senior her fourth penalty kick of the season. The midfielder converted on the penalty to put Molloy in front, 2-1.
Top Performances
- Poetzsch tallied two goals and now leads the team with 14. The Hicksville, N.Y. native has six goals in three postseason matches.
- Carty made three saves in the win.
- Verni tallied three shots.
