Molloy Tops Mercy in Double Overtime to Win Second Consecutive ECC Crown

Rockville Centre, N.Y. - Senior Dana Poetzsch's double-overtime goal led the No. 1 Molloy Lions to a 1-0 victory over the No. 2 Mercy Mavericks in the East Coast Conference Final at John  A. Darcy Field. This is the Lions' second consecutive conference title. The maroon and white, which is ranked No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and No. 3 in the East Region,  improved to 17-2 on the season. 

How it Happened 

  • The Lions created their first chance in the 29th minute. Junior Lexi Verni had a shot denied by Mercy keeper Melissa Torres. 
  • In the 34th minute, senior Jackie Carty stopped a try from Nikki Bermudez. 
  • Verni had two more opportunities stopped in the 38th and 45th minutes, respectively. 
  • The shots were even at four and the match was scoreless at the end of the first half. 
  • In the 70th minute, Mercy's Claudia McKail sent a free kick over the net. 
  • Sophomore Erin Fogarty sent a shot wide in the 73rd minute. 
  • Mercy led 6-5 in shots after 90 minutes of play. 
  • There were no shots in the first overtime period. 
  • Verni ran in and had a shot stopped in the 105th minute. 
  • Moments later, Poetzsch broke in and scored to win the match for the Lions. 

Top Performances 

  • Poetzsch tallied her 12th goal of the season and is now tied for the team lead. 
  • Carty made one save for her 11th shutout of the season, which tied her school record she set in 2019. 
  • Verni led the team with four shots on goal.
