Molloy Tops Bentley For Program's First NCAA Tournament Win

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The third-seeded Molloy women's soccer team defeated the sixth-seeded Bentley Falcons, 1-0, in the NCAA East Region Quarterfinal Friday at Mercy Field. The Lions improved to 15-4-2, while Bentley moved to 10-8-2. The 15 wins are the most in program history.

How it Happened

  • The Falcons took the first six shots of the contest.
  • In the 45th minute, junior Lauren Marinello had a chance stopped.
  • Junior Jackie Carty made four saves in the first stanza.
  • In the 49th minute, sophomore Meaghan O'Callaghan had a shot stopped, then, Marinello fired the rebound over the net.
  • Freshman Eleni Sofroniou picked up a loose ball in the box and scored to make it 1-0 in the 69th minute.
  • Carty made a save in the 90th minute to secure the victory.

Top Performances

  • Sofroniou netted her second goal of the season.
  • Carty made seven saves for her 11th shutout of the season.
  • Junior Dana Poetzsch led the team with three shots.

Coach's Comments

  • "We weren't very good in the first half. We gave them too much time and space," head coach Steve Price said. "In the second half, we changed the system, we controlled possession, and we deserved to win."

  • The Lions will play the winner of the match between second-seeded Mercy and seventh-seeded Southern New Hampshire. The Regional Semifinal is scheduled for Sunday, November 24 at 12:00 p.m. at Mercy Field.
