Upset-Minded Wildcats Fall In NCAA Tournament Debut

Albany, N.Y. - Daemen College saw their season come to an end this evening following a 4-0 loss to the College of St. Rose in opening round action of the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championships. The Wildcats, who earned the No. 8 seed to the NCAA East Regional, could not solve the high-powered Golden Knights, the region's No. 1 seed and also the No. 11 ranked team in the latest Division II national poll from the United Soccer Coaches.

Daemen was making their NCAA tournament debut, and the loss sent their overall record to 11-4-2. St. Rose, champions of the Northeast-10 Conference, improved to 18-2-1. The Golden Knights are making their 15th NCAA tournament appearance since 1996. 

TOP PERFORMERS

  • St. Rose got single tallies from Deanna Trongone, Caitlyn Dabagian, Olivia Boucher and Sanna Rein.
  • Morgan Burchhardt notched a pair of assists, bringing her season total to 13.
  • Marika Laurendeau went the distance in goal, making three saves to record the shutout for St. Rose.
  • Daemen's three shots on goal came from Sam Hanes (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), Grace Stranahan (Grand Island, N.Y.) and Alyssa Mercado (Ontario, Calif.)
  • Junior goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.) made three saves for Daemen.


HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trongone put the hosts on the board with her goal in the 15th minute, the first of three for St. Rose in the period. 
  • Dabagian made it 2-0 with her goal off a corner kick set piece. She touched in the feed of Burchhardt for her eighth marker of the season.
  • Boucher knocked in her own rebound in the 31st minute to make it 3-0. It marked her 11th goal of the campaign. 
  • Rein added an insurance goal in the 73rd minute, heading in another corner kick feed from Burchhardt.

"I thought we played very good soccer today. We struggled to clear on their set pieces and that was the difference. We fought to the end and I'm so proud of the entire team."

GAME NOTES

  • With the loss, so ends the careers of Daemen's five seniors: Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.), Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.), Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia), Michelle Fiore (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Erin Egan (Williamsville, N.Y.).
  • Boyar ends her remarkable four-year career with 55 goals and 121 points in 68 games played. She set a new program record for career goals in Daemen's regular-season finale at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Nov. 9, and she finishes second in program history for points.
  • Daemen surrendered more than two goals for just the second time all season. The only other time they did so was in a 3-1 loss to the same St. Rose team back on Oct. 19. Daemen had posted team records for shutouts (8) and goals allowed (13) during the regular season.
  • St. Rose came into the game ranked 11th in the country in scoring offense, averaging 2.85 goals per game. After tonight's result, they've outscored their opponents 61-19 this season. 
  • St. Rose advances to Sunday's regional semifinal against fourth-seeded Stonehill College. The Skyhawks advanced with a 2-1 defeat of fifth-seeded Jefferson University earlier today.
