UB Wins Third East Region Championship in Four Years

Bloomsburg, Pa.- For the third time in the last four seasons, the University of Bridgeport women's soccer has captured the NCAA Division II East Regional title, as the Purple Knights defeated fellow East Coast Conference member, LIU Post, 1-0, in a match held at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.  Bridgeport will now face the winner of the Atlantic Region with a trip to the National Semifinals on the line.  That match will take place on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. again on the campus of Bloomsburg University.

Friday's win lifts UB's overall season record to 17-4-1, and the Pioneers close out their season at 14-4-4 with three of those losses coming against Bridgeport.

The Purple Knights scored the only goal of Friday's match just 7:25 into play when junior Maegen Doyle (Harwich, England) scored her single-season school record 26th goal of 2018 off a cross from sophomore Andrea Basilicato (Guilford, Conn.).  Doyle now has scored goals in sixteen consecutive matches in which she has played.

Friday's match was a defensive struggle as both team combined for only 15 total shots, with Bridgeport holding a slight 8-7 advantage.

UB senior goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) made one save to earn the shutout, her tenth clean sheet of 2018 and number 31 of her stellar career.  Wendelius also now has 56 wins in a Bridgeport uniform.

LIU Post's Hillevi Eklow made five saves for the Pioneers.
