LIU Post Advances to NCAA Second Round with 2-0 Win Over Franklin Pierce

Garden City, N.Y. – The fourth-seeded LIU Post women's soccer team defeated fifth-seeded Franklin Pierce University, 2-0, in an NCAA Division II Tournament first-round match-up on Friday at Adelphi University's Motamed Field.

The win advances the Pioneers (16-3-1) to their fourth-consecutive appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The green and gold got on the board in the 10th minute, when red-shirt sophomore Alice Schonfeldt converted on a penalty-kick to take the 1-0 lead over the Ravens.

In the final minute of the first half, Veronica Saager fired an Andrea Huntzinger pass into the mesh to extend LIU Post's lead to 2-0.

The Pioneers, who led 2-0 at the break, held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes of play. They also held the Ravens without a shot in the last 25 minutes.

Franklin Pierce would generate five shots to LIU Post's five in the second half, forcing Pioneers' keeper Hillevi Eklow into making a pair of saves in the frame. In the end, the Ravens could not find the back of the net as the Pioneers advance to the second round with a 2-0 victory.

Between the pipes, junior goalie Eklow tallied three saves for LIU Post in the win. Casey Cook stopped five shots for Franklin Pierce.

Head Coach Mark Dawson and the Pioneers will now face top-seeded Adelphi University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 12) at 2 p.m. in Garden City.
