LIU Post Downs Roberts Wesleyan in Penalty Kicks in NCAA Action

Bridgeport, Conn. - On Friday, the fifth-seeded LIU Post women's soccer team rallied from a one-goal deficit late in the second half to upset fourth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan College to advance to the second round of the 2015 NCAA Division II Championship.

The Pioneers (14-3-3) advanced on penalty kicks, 5-3, and will play top-seeded University of Bridgeport on Sunday (Nov. 15) at 1 p.m.

Following a scoreless opening half, the Redhawks (12-5-3) got on the board first in the 63rd minute.

Facing elimination, senior forward Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway) found freshman forward Andrea Huntzinger (Stockholm. Sweden) in the box. Huntzinger connected for the game-tying goal in the 84th minute.

After the teams played a pair of scoreless overtime periods, the game would be decided by penalty kicks.

The Pioneers shot first, with senior back Katie LaManna (Smithtown, N.Y.) giving LIU Post a 1-0 lead. Roberts answered with a successful attempt of its own, tying it at 1-all.

LIU Post and Roberts Wesleyan traded goals in the second round. In the third round, junior midfielder Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden) converted, before Roberts missed wide right. Sophomore midfielder Klara Berggren (Stockholm, Sweden) made it 4-2 with a successful kick and Roberts subsequenty closed the gap to 4-3.

With a chance to win it, senior midfielder Morgan Miller (West Nyack, N.Y.) found the back of the net to send the Pioneers onto the second round.
