LIU Post Takes Down Assumption, 2-0, in NCAA Tournament Play

Albany, N.Y. - The fifth-seeded LIU Post women's soccer team knocked off fourth-seeded Assumption, 2-0, in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Friday afternoon in Albany.
 
With the win, the Pioneers (15-2-1) advance to take on top-seeded Saint Rose in a second-round match-up on Sunday (Nov. 16) at noon.
 
LIU Post found itself up 1-0 late in the first half. In the 36th minute, the Pioneers earned a corner kick. The ball was sent into the box, and after a scramble in front, junior back Morgan Miller (West Nyack, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the one-goal advantage.
 
The Pioneers dominated time of possession in the first 45 minutes. The green and gold were able to get off 13 shots, seven of which were on target. Assumption (15-5-1) only managed two shots, one on target. LIU Post also held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
 
In the second half, Assumption came out looking to tie it up, but the Pioneers were able to shut them down each time on attack.
 
In the 50th minute, senior back Lauren Bellone (West Islip, N.Y.) found sophomore forward Julia Backman (Morsil, Sweden) with a cross that Backman sent home for the 2-0 cushion.
 
The Pioneer defense was able to hold off the Greyhound counter, as Assumption outshot LIU Post, 7-5, in the latter stanza. Sophomore keeper Hreffie Agnarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland) made four saves to preserve the clean sheet.
