Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - Two early second half goals by the University of Bridgeport women's soccer team help lift the Purple Knights into the Second Round of the 2014 NCAA Division Women's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 Opening Round win over the Philadelphia University Rams at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York on a windy and chilly Friday afternoon. UB, the number three seed in the East Region, ups its overall record to 14-4-2, and will move on to face the second-seeded Mercy College Mavericks on Mercy's home field at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. November 16. Philadelphia U., the number six seed in the East Region and making its first-ever NCAA appearance, closes out 2014 at 14-7-1.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, UB got on the scoreboard just 55 seconds into the second half, when sophomore Amanda Moura (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) netted her tenth goal of the season off a corner kick from classmate Tabea Rauschenberger (Mühlacker, Germany).
Just a little over three minutes later, UB senior Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England) would give her team some insurance with a beautiful strike over the Rams' keeper for her tenth goal of the year.
The Purple Knights' dominated the flow of play all afternoon outshooting Philadelphia University, 24-5.
Bridgeport freshman goalkeeper Kaitlin Occhipinti (Islip, N.Y.) made three saves to record her ninth solo shutout of 2014. As a team, the Purple Knights now have 13 clean sheets so far this season.
UB and Mercy have met twice so far in 2014 with the Mavericks coming out on top in both meetings, 2-1 in the regular season and 1-0, in last Friday's East Coast Conference Championship Final. Sunday's tilt will mark the third time this year the two teams have met in Dobbs Ferry.
