Indianapolis, Ind. – The ECC
Women’s Soccer Champion, Mercy Mavericks, will be joined by
conference foes Bridgeport and LIU Post in the NCAA Division II
Women’s Soccer Championship field, which was announced on
Monday evening. Mercy is the No. 2 seed, Bridgeport is the No. 3
seed, and LIU Post is the No. 5 seed in the East Region
bracket.
Mercy makes the field of 48 teams vying for a National Championship
for the second straight season. The Mavericks won their first-ever
ECC Championship to earn the conference’s automatic bid. With
a record of 16-2-1, Mercy earned the No. 2 seed and a first round
bye.
The Mavericks will host the winner of No. 3 Bridgeport and No. 6
Philadelphia University.
Bridgeport earns an at-large bid with a record of 13-4-2 on the
year. This marks the seventh NCAA Tournament appearance in eight
seasons for the Purple Knights. Bridgeport’s opponent,
Philadelphia, champions of the Central Atlantic Collegiate
Conference, enters the tournament with a record of 14-6-1. The two
squads met earlier this season, with the Purple Knights coming away
victorious by a score of 3-0.
Mercy currently boasts a 3-0 combined record on the year against
their potential second round opponents. The defeated Philadelphia
by a score of 1-0 on October 22, and beat Bridgeport twice
including by a 1-0 tally in the ECC Championship final.
LIU Post is back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since
the 2011 season, earning an at-large bid. The Pioneers, who were
ECC Regular Season Champions, will travel to Albany, N.Y., home of
top seeded Saint Rose, to take on No. 4 seed Assumption in a first
round match-up. Like LIU Post, Assumption was the regular season
champion of their conference, the Northeast 10, and come in to
tournament play with a 15-4-1 record.
