Purple Knights Reach ECC Women's Soccer Championship Final with 3-1 Win Over LIU Post

Bridgeport. Conn. - The top-seeded University of Bridgeport women’s soccer team advanced to the 2013 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament Final with an impressive 3-1 win over the visiting fourth-seeded Pioneers of LIU Post on Thursday evening at Knights Field.  The Purple Knights will now host the number two seed, Mercy College Mavericks at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 9 to decide the 2013 ECC Women’s Soccer Championship.  Saturday’s winner will receive an automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament that will begin on Friday, November 15.  Bridgeport, ranked number 23 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, heads into Saturday’s ECC Final with a 16-2-0 overall record and a perfect 9-0 mark at Knights Field.  LIU Post is now 13-5-0 overall.
 
Bridgeport did all of its scoring in the first half, as sophomore Flo Gamby (Goffs Oak, England) got UB on the scoreboard first when she headed home a free kick from freshman Tabea Rauschenberger (Mühlacker, Germany) for her ninth goal of the season at the 33:29 mark.
 
Sophomore Gabby Reis (West Haven, Conn.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal at the 38:25 mark when she put home her third goal of 2013 when she picked up a loose ball off a scramble in the 18-yard box.
 
Junior Danielle Puddefoot (Slough, England) wrapped up the scoring for the Purple Knights in the opening half when she connected on her team-leading 13 goal of the year as she floated home a long shot to the upper right corner of the Pioneers’ net.
 
LIU Post spoiled Bridgeport’s shutout bid with just under 10 minutes to play in the match when freshman Julia Backman fired home a free kick for fifth goal of the year at the 80:49 mark.
 
Pioneers’ goalkeeper Hreffie Agnarsdottir made seven saves facing 14 UB shots, and Bridgeport senior goalie Julia Hansson (Tockfors, Sweden) made two saves facing 12 Pioneers’ shots to pick up her sixteenth victory of the season.
 
Bridgeport will be looking for its first East Coast Conference title since 2009.
