West Chester, Pa. - The Golden Lions ended
their historic season this afternoon at West Chester University
after suffering a tough 1-0 loss to the defending National Champion
Golden Knights of the College of St. Rose (19-2-2). Dowling
finishes their season at 14-4-3.
The Golden Knights held a slight edge over the Golden Lions in the
first half with a 4-2 shot advantage. In the 19th minute
Brittney Barry sent a quick shot on target, but DC's Melissa
Guglielmo managed to get a had on it and sent it over the
crossbar.
Dowling's best opportunity came in the 25th minute after a St. Rose
foul prompted a free kick for Alexis Parrotta, but the Golden
Knight keeper Jessica Gerski was there for the save.
After the break St. Rose came out hard on the attack maintaining
possession on the Dowling defensive end. In the 60th minute
the Golden Knights had a string of three consecutive corner kicks
and the third kick sent in by Amanda Vasquez was bounced around in
the box and Barry came up with the ball a put in the near
post to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead.
St. Rose continued to attack putting together five more shots, two
saved by Guglielmo. In the final minutes, Dowling
pushed up in an effort to tie the game up, but Allie Merrill's shot
in the closing seconds was over the crossbar.
St. Rose out shot the Golden Lions 15-4 and held an 11-1 advantage
in corner kicks.
Guglielmo finished with eight saves on the day with her counterpart
Gerski coming up with two.
