Manchester N.H. - The Dowling College Women's
Soccer team (14-3-3) made program history this afternoon with a 2-0
win over the top seeded Pioneers of LIU Post (15-3-2) in the
NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Second Round match at
Larkin Field Sunday afternoon. Lindsey Thompson and Alexis
Parrotta lead the fourth seeded Golden Lions to the East Region
final.
LIU Post and Dowling faced each other twice with both teams winning
a game each earlier this season.
In the first half Dowling picked up the offensive tempo rather
quicky when Erika Krumholz had the first shot 32 seconds into the
game. Dowling contunued with the hard offensive force and in the
22nd minute Parrotta scored the go ahead goal with her
seventh of the season. The goal came with an assist by Krumholz who
blasted a shot that could not be coralled by LIU Post's keeper
Nicole Fierro and Parrotta was there to put in the rebound. The
pressure did not stop for Dowling at the end of the half the Golden
Lions out shot LIU Post 6-2.
Dowling again started their attack quickly in the second half with
a shot in the first minute by Kayla Mueger. Later in the
half, Thompson received a pass from Parrotta in the box where she
beat Fierro and dribbled in for her ninth goal of the season.
The Golden Lions out shot the Pioneers 13 to 6. Goalie Melissa
Guglielmo recorded the win and shut out.
Dowling now moves on to face the NCAA Division II defending
National Champion, College of St. Rose, in the East Region final.
The winner of that game advances to the NCAA Championship
Quarterfinals and will face the winner of West Chester/Slippery
Rock.
