Indianapolis - On Monday evening, ECC rivals
LIU Post and Dowling College were among the 48 teams selected for a
chance to compete for a National Championship in the NCAA Division
II Women’s Soccer Championship. LIU Post grabbed the top seed
in the East Region despite being an at-large selection. Dowling,
the No. 4 seed, won the conference’s automatic berth into the
tournament after capturing the ECC Women’s Soccer
Championship with a 1-0 victory over Bridgeport on Sunday
afternoon.
Despite being the top seed, LIU Post was unable to host on their
campus due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Instead LIU Post
will hit the road and will be joined by Dowling at Southern New
Hampshire University. The Golden Lions will face the fifth seeded
hosts and Northeast 10 Conference Champions in a first round
matchup against on November 9. Dowling and Southern New Hampshire
have only met once before in their history, with the Penmen coming
away victorious in a 2009 contest.
The winner of the Dowling vs. Southern New Hampshire game will
advance to face LIU Post on November 11. The Pioneers defeated the
Penmen 1-0 earlier this season. A matchup with Dowling would be a
rubber match between the two ECC schools, as they have split their
two previous meetings. LIU Post won 2-1 in double overtime in the
regular season, while Dowling was victorious by the same score in
the ECC Championship semifinals.
In the other half of the East Region bracket, No. 2 American
International joins LIU Post with a first round bye. The Yellow
Jackets will take on the winner of the game between No. 3 and
defending National Champion, Saint Rose, and No. 6
Wilmington.
