Brookhaven, N.Y. - The Golden Lions advance to
the East Coast Conference Championship final match with a 2-1 win
over the Pioneers of LIU Post today at Golden Lions Field.
Dowling improves to 12-3-2 on the season as the Pioneers drop to
15-2-2.
Dowling took to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when Alexis Parrotta
sent a corner kick into the box where Allie Abruzzo's header inside
the left post found the back of the net. Abruzzo returned the
favor with a cross into Parrotta, but her shot hit the near post
and bounced back into play.
In the 39th minute Lindsey Thompson broke through the Pioneer
defense and from 15 yards blasted a shot inside the right post to
extend the DC lead to 2-0.
With just over a minute remaining a cross from LIU's Susanne
Vistnes sent a cross into Lina Harle, but DC keeper Melissa
Guglielmo made a point blank save to preserve the shutout going
into the half.
The Pioneers cut the lead in half in the third minute of the second
half after Vistnes brought down a free kick and put in a shot
through the lower left corner past a diving Guglielmo.
The Pioneers were held to just two shots in the second half as the
Golden Lions finished with the 2-1 win.
Dowling held a 19-10 shot advantage with Guglielmo coming up with
three saves. LIU's keeper Nicole Fierro finished with six
saves.
The Golden Lions travel to play the Purple Knights of the
University of Bridgeport this Sunday, November 4th at 12:00 PM.
