KANSAS CITY, Kan. (Dec. 9, 2008)- The National Soccer Coaches Association released its All-America picks Tuesday morning. C.W. Post Sophomore defender Anna Svensson (Stockholm, Sweden) was the only member of the East Coast Conference to receive All-America nods, as she was placed on the second team roster.
Prior to the beginning of the season, Svensson was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She also garnered First Team All-Conference accolades from the ECC as well as Daktronics, Inc. All-Northeast Region Second Team honors after the close of regular season play. Svensson proved to be an anchor on the Pioneer defense, helping to maintain a .51 goals against average. With the help of Svensson and the rest of the Pioneers defense, C.W. Post was ranked 12th in the nation in goals against average and 11th in shutout percentage. She finished out the season notching one assist, making the starting lineup for all 21 of the Pioneers matches.
In addition, eleven players from ECC institutions have been placed on the NSCAA All-East Region Team. ECC Defender of the Year, Emma Woolley (University of Bridgeport) joined Svensson on the First Team. The junior midfielder helped her team capture their first NCAA Tournament victory this season, defeating the Pioneers 1-0.
Senior defender Theresa Ennis of Adelphi University, sophomore forward Ivana Babic of CW Post and sophomore forward Linda Velaj of Bridgeport all garnered Second Team Honors.
Five ECC institutions were represented on the Third Team. Rookie keeper Allie Weiser (CW Post), sophomore defender Rakel Hinriksdottir (Bridgeport), sophomore midfielder Danielle DeLuca (CW Post), freshman midfielder Megan Emanuelo (NYIT), junior forward Vanessa Moreira and sophomore forward Andrea Slavin (Queens) were all named Third Team recipients.
