Panthers highlighted for sportsmanship and fair play.
Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's
soccer team has been selected as the recipient of the New York
Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (ISOA)
Sportsmanship Award for 2008. The team will be honored at the
annual awards banquet on November 18 at The Sterling in Bethpage,
N.Y.
Referees in the New York Metro chapter vote each year among teams
they officiate, looking for fair play, respect for teammates and
opponents as well as the game itself. "The Panther team embodied
all of these characteristics, " said Joe Danbusky,
secretary-treasurer of the Metro NY ISOA. "Adelphi and its staff
are to be commended for instilling these life-defining qualities in
its players."
Adelphi and the East Coast Conference are committed to providing a
positive game environment for the student-athletes, coaches, team
representatives and officials. A sportsmanship statement read by a
player from each team prior to the start of the contest has been
well received.
The Panthers finished the 2008 season with a 14-4-1 overall record
and a second place finish in the ECC. An early exit in the
conference tournament kept the Adelphi out of NCAA Regionals. Seven
players earned all-conference honors.
In addition to the team's success on the field, women's soccer also
excels in the classroom. Dating back to 1995 and for each of the
past 13 years the Panthers have earned team recognition by the
NSCAA for maintaining a combined grade point average of 3.0 or
higher.
