Caldwell to Face Sacred Heart In NCAA Bowling Championship First Round

Indianapolis - East Coast Conference Champion, Caldwell University, will take on Sacred Heart University in a play-in match of the National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship the NCAA announced on Wednesday afternoon.

On Sunday, Caldwell (54-45) topped defending conference  Champion, Lincoln Memorial, to capture an ECC title and the league's automatic bid. The Cougars, who are in their first season in the ECC, are making their first appearance in the NCAA Championship.

Caldwell was one of 12 teams selected to compete in the championship. The top four seeds received byes to the quarterfinals while the remaining eight squads will compete in first round matchups.

The Cougars' first round date with Sacred Heart will be on April 6 at Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Delaware. Sacred Heart earned their spot in the tournament by winning the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship.

The Pioneers will be a familiar opponent for Caldwell. The Cougars competed in the NEC prior to joining the ECC this season. The two schools have also met twice already this season, splitting a pair of matches on October 20 (Caldwell, 911-896) and October 27 (Sacred Heart, 881-676).

The format of the opening round match will be a best-of-three mega match featuring five person traditional, Baker total pin fall, and best-of-seven Baker match play. The winner of the match will advance to the final double elimination bracket that will feature eight teams from April 11-13 at RollHouse Wickliffe in Wickliffe, Ohio.  No. 1 Vanderbilt awaits the winner of Caldwell/Sacred Heart.  

The championship final will air at 6:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, April 13 on ESPNU.
