Old Westbury, N.Y. - Shalie Frierson banked in a floater with 4.2 seconds left to give third-seeded New York Tech a 61-59 win over sixth-seeded Bridgeport in the First Round of the East Coast Conference Women's Basketball Championship.
Frierson was 2-of-15 before hitting the final shot. The game-winner was the only two-point field goal the junior made on the night and finished the night with eight points.
New York Tech (20-9) won its ninth straight game overall and sixth straight against Bridgeport (6-23) by scoring the final 10 points of the game.
Bridgeport led 53-41, heading into the fourth quarter after outscoring Tech 23-9 in the third. Tech opened the final quarter with a 10-0 run over the opening 2:02. The Bears went 4-for-4 during the span to cut the deficit 53-51 Bridgeport.
The Purple Knights responded with six straight to restore an eight-point lead at 59-51 with 3:55 remaining.
During the Bears' 10-0 spurt to close the game, they went 4-of-5 and held the Purple Knights 0-for-3 from the field and forced a pair of turnovers.
Zoe Amalbert paced the Bears' offense with 14 points and six assists.
Bridgeport hit 53-percent from behind arc compared to Tech's 25-percent from deep. Four Purple Knights were in double figures.
New York Tech advances to the semifinals of the ECC Women's Basketball Championship to face No. 2 seed Daemen on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The semifinals and finals will be at University of the District of Columbia.
