UDC and LIU Post Earn NCAA Tournament Berths

Indianapolis, Ind. – The East Coast Conference will send two teams to the 2014 NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship Tournament with ECC Champion, University of the District of Columbia, and LIU Post making the cut in the 64 team bracket released by the NCAA on Sunday evening.

After clinching their first-ever ECC Championship with a 67-57 victory over LIU Post on Saturday afternoon, UDC earned the conference's automatic berth into the East Region field. The Firebirds are making their second appearance in the tournament in the three seasons since they joined the ECC and sixth overall in program history. With the run to the ECC Championship, UDC moved up two spots from their perch in the final East Region rankings and earn the No. 5 seed in the regional bracket.

The Firebirds First Round foe will be No. 4 seed, Stonehill, who earns an at-large berth bid out of the Northeast-10 Conference. Stonehill is making their second straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

ECC Regular Season Champion, LIU Post, earns an at-large bid for their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Pioneers, with a record of 22-6 earn the No. 3 seed and will take on sixth seeded, Assumption, also of the Northeast-10. The two schools squared off earlier this season in January 4th with LIU Post coming away with a 86-64 victory on their home court.

Undefeated and nationally top-ranked Bentley University earns the No. 1 seed and hosting duties for the East Regional. The Falcons will host the regional at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass. for the fourth time in as many seasons after capturing the Northeast-10 Championship. They will take on Bloomfield, champions of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

No. 2 Adelphi takes on No. 7 New Haven to round out the bracket.

UDC and LIU Post will attempt to become the third team from the ECC to ever win the East Region crown. In 2013, Dowling became the second ECC school to pull the trick and advanced all the way to the National Championship game before falling (St. Rose, former member currently in the Northeast 10, also won in 1999).

Tournament play will begin at Bentley with quarterfinal action on Friday, March 14. The semifinals will take place Saturday, March 15 and after a day off, the championship game will be on Monday, March 17 at 7:00 p.m.
