Central Islip, N.Y. – After an incredible
run to the NCAA Division II National Championship game, the Dowling
women’s basketball team comes in at No. 2 in the final USA
Today Sports Top 25 poll. The Golden Lions ranking is both a
program high and the highest for a women’s basketball team in
East Coast Conference history.
Dowling finished the 2012-13 season with a 30-4 mark, capturing the
ECC Regular and Post-Season Championships, as well as the NCAA East
Region Championship along the way. The Golden Lions East Region
title was the second in ECC history.
Defense was the Golden Lions’ forte, as the team captured
NCAA statistical titles by leading the nation in scoring defense
(48.5 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (31.2 %).
Also included in the poll in the others receiving votes category
was NYIT. The Bears set a program record with 23 wins, reached as
high as No. 17 in the poll, and also earned the program’s
first ever NCAA Tournament berth.
