Central Islip, N.Y. - Felicia Joyner, a senior
guard for C.W. Post, has been selected as the 2012 ECC
Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, as voted on by the
league’s coaches. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Bianca
Kowgios was named the ECC Defensive Player of the Year for the
second consecutive season while Dowling’s Christine Verrelle
takes home the ECC Rookie of the Year honor.
Joyner put together an outstanding senior season to lead C.W. Post
to a 20-8 regular season record. Currently, she sits third in the
conference in scoring at 17.1 points per game and has scored in
double figures in all but two games on the season. Joyner has also
topped the 20 point mark on nine different occasions. In
addition to her prolific scoring, she also ranks in the top 15 in
the conference in assists with 66 on the year.
Verrelle earning the Rookie of the Year honor marks the third
consecutive year the award has gone to a Dowling player. Verrelle
has been an all-around force for the Golden Lions in her rookie
season. On the offensive end, she led the conference in three point
percentage (47.1%) and ranked third in free throw percentage (83.3
%) to average 8.7 points per game. Verrelle also was the top
rebounding guard in the conference and ranked in the top ten
overall with a 6.8 per game average.
After earning the first ever ECC Defensive Player of the Year
honor a season ago, Kowgios repeats as the winner in 2012.
Usually assigned the task of guarding the opposition’s top
guard, Kowgios ranks second in the conference with 69 steals. She
also helped out in the rebounding category from the guard position,
averaging 5.3 per game.
