Brookville, N.Y. - Four women’s
basketball players from the East Coast Conference have been named
to the Daktronics All-Region squad. Janea Aiken of C.W. Post was
the only First Team selection from the ECC, while Cierra Baker of
NYIT, Kelly Keil of Bridgeport, and Briana Sloper of St. Thomas
Aquinas made the Second Team.
Aiken, who recently earned her second straight ECC Player of the
Year award, earns a spot on the First Team. On the year, Aiken
averaged 17.9 points per game while also ranking in the top ten in
the conference in steals and assists. In the ECC Women’s
Basketball Championship, Aiken stepped her game up even more,
averaging 29 points per game in leading the Pioneers to the title
and first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2001. Her
outstanding play earned her the tournament’s Most Outstanding
Player honor.
Baker was a double double machine for NYIT this season, finishing
with 19 in 26 games played. Baker, who was also an ECC
All-Conference First Teamer, averaged 17.5 points and 12.4 rebounds
per game. Her rebounding total ranked second in the country.
Keil, another ECC All-Conference First Team selection, wrapped up
her collegiate career with a strong season. Keil averaged 15.8
points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while also finishing second in
the conference in blocked shots with 95.
Sloper earns a spot on the Second Team after sharing the ECC Player
of the Year honor with Janea Aiken. In leading St. Thomas Aquinas
to the ECC Regular Season title, Sloper reached the 1,000 point
plateau in just her junior season. Her 17.7 points per game average
was good for third in the ECC.
Junior center Jewel White (Worcester, Mass.) of Franklin Pierce has
been named the East Region Player of the Year. White leads the
entire Northeast-10 in scoring, rebounding and field goal
percentage, averaging 19.4 points and 11.9 rebounds with a .599
field goal percentage. She was the only player to average 10
or more rebounds this season. She was also voted the NE-10
Player of the Year by the league’s coaches.
Joining White and Aiken on the First Team are senior forward
Catherine Carr (Bernardsville, N.J.) of Holy Family University,
senior guard Caitlin Shaw (Eatontown, N.J.) of the University of
the Sciences Philadelphia and junior forward Kelly Meredith
(Franklin, Mass.) of Assumption College.
