Four Named to the Women’s Basketball Academic All-District Teams

Central Islip, N.Y. - Four East Coast Conference women's basketball players were recognized for their achievements both on the court and in the classroom as they earned spots on the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District teams as selected by CoSIDA (The College Sports Information Directors of America).

Dowling's Simona Bartkova (Greve, Denmark) was named to the First Team while E.J. Dreyer (Floral Park, N.Y.) from Molloy and Sidney Parson (Chandler, Ariz.) from Bridgeport garnered Second Team honors.  Bridgeport's Shannon Malone (Melbourne, Australia) rounded out the ECC representation, earning a spot on the Third Team.

On the court, Bartkova ranks fifth in the ECC with a 46.6 shooting percentage while ranking ninth in rebounding (6.3/game).  The senior Biology major has earned her spot on both the Dowling Honor Roll as well as the Athletic Director's Honor Roll and is currently researching anti-cancer properties in various bacteria and fungi under a grant with her professor. 

For the season, Dreyer is averaging 7.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.  She is ranked 94th in the country in steals per game (2.3) while cracking the ECC leader boards, ranking fifth in steal average and 12th in rebounding.  The senior is currently pursuing her degree in Nursing.

Parsons ranks eighth in the ECC with 3.0 assists per game while averaging 8.5 points per game.  A three-time Academic All-District recipient, Parsons boasts a perfect 4.0 GPA as a social sciences major.

Malone, also garnering honors for the third consecutive year, ranks fourth in the ECC in assists (4.31pg), seventh rebounding (6.5pg) and ninth is steals (2.06pg).

About Academic All-America Program
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
