LIU Post Rallies in Final At-bat to Down Rival Adelphi

New Castle, Del. – A three-run rally, highlighted by a two-run home run by senior Julia Seader, during the top of the seventh inning helped the second-seeded LIU Post softball team come from behind to defeat No. 6 seed Adelphi University by a 4-2 margin in a winners' bracket game during the NCAA Division II softball championship on Friday, May 10 at Asbury Field.

Trailing 2-1 entering the final inning, senior Leah Mele led off the seventh by beating out an infield single with a head-first slide into first base. After a sacrifice bunt and a flyout to right field, Mele advanced to third base as the tying run with two outs. Junior Allie Laird battled at the plate and sent a slow roller to second base and once again beat out an infield single with a head-first slide into first base to help the Pioneers tie the score at 2-2.

After the first pitch sailed outside to Seader, the senior catcher ripped a frozen-rope home run on a 1-0 pitch over the right-center field fence to give LIU Post a 4-2 lead. Senior Hannah Olshevski took care of the rest during the bottom of the seventh inning, retiring the Panthers in order to help push LIU Post into Saturday's championship series.

Laird and Seader finished with two hits apiece, while junior Abbey Fortin added one hit with one run batted in, and sophomore Hanna Finkelstein and Mele tallied one hit each. In the circle, junior Katie Humhej tallied 3.1 innings, allowing two runs. Olshevski tallied the final 3.2 innings, striking out two batters and allowing just two hits to earn the win.
