LIU Post Takes Down No. 7 New Haven in NCAA Opening Round, 2-0

New Castle, Del. – Junior Katie Humhej tossed a shutout during the opening round of the NCAA Division II Championship to help lead the second-seeded LIU Post softball team to a 2-0 victory against No. 7 seed University of New Haven at Asbury Field on Thursday, May 9.

Senior Julia Seader continued to rewrite the LIU Post record books when she took a pitch to the opposite field for a solo home run during the bottom of the first inning. With the homer, Seader reached 295 career hits, becoming the all-time leader in program history. The senior surpassed the previous mark of 294 held by Melissa Medina '10.

Seader was one of four Pioneers to record a hit on the day, as senior Ashley Melendez, junior Megan Sneeden, and sophomore Breanna Klaiber recorded one hit each. In the circle, Humhej allowed just five hits while striking out five batters to earn the win.

It was a quick start to the day when Seader gave the Green and Gold a 1-0 advantage with her 19th home run of the season during the first frame. An inning later, Melendez drove home Sneeden to double the Pioneer advantage to 2-0.

Humhej worked out of trouble during the third inning when she stranded two runners in scoring position to preserve the shutout. The Chargers threatened again during the top of the sixth, loading the bases with a two-out single before Fortin made a running catch on a line drive to center field to strand the bases loaded. The Pioneers carried the 2-0 lead into the seventh inning where Humhej took care of the rest.

With the victory, the Pioneers advance into the winners' bracket and will take on No. 6 seed Adelphi University tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m.
