LIU Post Knocks Off Bridgeport in ECC Tournament, 3-2

Old Westbury, N.Y. - On Friday, the second-seeded LIU Post softball team stayed alive in the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship with a 3-2 win over fourth-seeded University of Bridgeport at the NYIT Softball Field.

The Pioneers (35-12-1) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. After back-to-back hits to start the inning, junior second baseman Kayla McCoy (Smithtown, N.Y.) flared a sacrifice fly to center, plating senior third baseman Maria Palmeri (Middle Village, N.Y.) for the game's first run.

Then, in the third, LIU Post doubled its lead on an RBI single to center by freshman catcher Julia Seader (Piscataway, N.J.).

The Purple Knights (19-30), who stranded three runners in scoring position over the first five innings, evened the score in the top of the sixth, before the Pioneers re-claimed the lead in the latter half of the frame.

With two outs and two runners in scoring position, McCoy hit into a fielder's choice that brought home sophomore pinch-runner Claire Travis (East Meadow, N.Y.) for the eventual game-winning run.

Despite allowing a two-out baserunner in the seventh, freshman pitcher Hannah Olshevski (Robbinsville, N.J.) kept Bridgeport off the board to secure the victory.

Olshevski scattered seven hits and two runs (one earned) with one walk and four strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
