LIU Post Softball Partakes in 5K Run For Cancer Awareness

East Meadow, N.Y. - On Sunday, the LIU Post softball team participated in the 14th-annual Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital 5K Family Run/Walk at Eisenhower Park.

The Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop-University Hospital meets the complex challenges of children's cancers and blood disorders with a relentless spirit and dedication to improving the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families. Embodying the principles of patient and family-centered care, the center provides young patients with comprehensive and sensitive care, while also supporting families from the moment of diagnosis, through intense treatments and long-term follow-up.

The Pioneers raised a total of $350 for the cause and completed the 5k race in the process.

"Every year, we participate in community service events that support good causes," said Head Softball Coach Jamie Apicella. "This year, we chose the Cancer Care for Kids walk. It was a beautiful day for the event and our student-athletes enjoyed the experience. Any time we can help out in the community, I feel that it connects our student-athletes with issues facing our society and hopefully shapes their lives to continue to be proactive with these causes long after they graduate from LIU Post."
