Queens Advances to ECC Championship with 4-1 Win over Roberts Wesleyan Friday

Flushing, N.Y. - The Queens College men's tennis team overcame losing the doubles point in their East Coast Conference semifinal match-up with Roberts Wesleyan on Friday (Apr. 26) to take down the Redhawks by a 4-1 score to advance to the ECC Championship match.

The top-seeded Knights will host the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 St. Thomas Aquinas and No. 3 NYIT, with the final taking place Saturday (Apr. 27) in Flushing at 12 p.m.

Queens fell in doubles play to the No. 4 Redhawks as top-tandem Cosme Jubera and Lucas Demuth were bested in a 6-2 battle against Guido Janssen and Boyd Blackburn. Roberts Wesleyan clinched the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match after Dennis Barlotta and Andrew Freeman sent Jose Zurro and Mariano Biblioni to a 6-4 defeat at No. 3 doubles.

The Knights stormed back into dominance in singles play, however, with Biblioni's 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth-singles over Matthew Forrest knotting the match up at 1-all. Zurro then took care of Freeman with a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the sixth-flight of singles to give Queens a 2-1 advantage. Jubera avenged his doubles loss to Janssen with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at the top spot before Richard Sec's 6-2, 6-2 win against Barlotta at fifth-singles secured the 4-1 victory and sent Queens to its sixth consecutive ECC Championship match.
