NYIT and Queens Men's and Women's Tennis Teams Selected for NCAA Championship

Indianapolis - Both the NYIT and Queens College men's and women's tennis teams earned spots in the upcoming NCAA Division II Tennis Championships.

On the men's side, NYIT received an automatic bid for winning their fourth straight ECC title with a tight 5-3 victory over Queens. The Bears, who are making their fifth straight NCAA appearance, earn the No. 2 seed in the East Region behind Concordia College. As the No. 2 seed, NYIT will host half of the East Region bracket.

NYIT, ranked No. 33 nationally in the latest ITA poll, will take on No. 7 seed, Merrimack. NYIT faced Merrimack earlier this season, coming away victorious by a final of 8-1. The winner of the first round match will advance to take on the winner of No. 3 Chestnut Hill and No. 6 Adelphi in the second round. NYIT also topped both Chestnut Hill and Adelphi by identical 8-1 margins, as well.

On the other half of the bracket is the Queen's men's tennis team. The Knights, who are hosting at their on-campus courts, earned the No. 4 seed for a second straight season. They will face No. 5 seeded Southern New Hampshire in the first round with the winner advancing to take on top seed and No. 17 nationally ranked, Concordia. Queens played Southern New Hampshire on February 26 and came away victorious by a final of 6-3.

On the women's side, NYIT earned the No. 1 seed and like the men, will also host half the bracket. The Bears are in the field for the fourth straight season and receive a bye in the first round. They will take on the winner of the first round match between No. 4 Adelphi and No. 5 Chestnut Hill. NYIT has topped both potential opponents earlier this season, beating Adelphi, 9-0, and Chestnut Hill, 6-3. A win would send NYIT to their fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Round of 16.

Queens is on the other half of the East Region bracket after earning the No. 2 seed and hosting duties. The Knights also have a first round bye and will take on the winner of No. 3 Concordia and No. 6 Stonehill in the second round. Queens beat Concordia, 6-3, on April 8 but have not faced Stonehill this season.  A win for Queens would send them to the NCAA Round of 16 for the second year in a row.
