Queens Tops UDC, 5-2, to Advance to ECC Final

Flushing, N.Y. - When District of Columbia faced Queens in Flushing 13 days ago, the Knights narrowly escaped with a 5-4 victory.  On Friday, in the East Coast Conference semi final, Queens had to come from behind to defeat the Firebirds, 5-2, in a match played at the tennis bubble in Flushing.

QC trailed 2-1 following the doubles matches.  The team of Ryan Frankel and Federico Toscano, whom were both selected All ECC Second Team, just a day before, came out ahead, 8-4.  Sharvill Nawghre and Gabriel Medez were narrowly defeated, 8-6, in first doubles, while Lucas Martinez and Christopher Baron fell by that same, 8-6 score.

The Knights took control of the match in singles competition, winning all four flights that were completed.  Frankel disposed of his opponent, 6-3, 6-2 and leveled the match at 2-2.  Mendez came out on top 6-0, 6-4, to put the Knights ahead, 3-2.  The fourth point came from Nawghre, who triumphed at first singles, 6-2 and 6-2.  In a way fitting for an outgoing senior who has been part of the team for three years, Christopher Baron clinched the match for Queens, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

With the victory, the team is now 13-3 overall and has won eight straight matches.  They move to the ECC Final where they face NYIT on Saturday at noon.
