Queens, N.Y. - When these two schools met
earlier in the month, it was District of Columbia that came away
with the victory, but the Queens College men’s tennis team
exorcised those demons and avenged the loss with a 5-3, upset win
to move on in the NCAA Tournament with Concordia on tap
Monday. The Knights improved to 12-5 on the season, with the
win.
It looked like an inauspicious start for the Knights in doubles
play, as they lost two of the three matches. The first
doubles match had UDC’s Carlos Quiroga and Simon Bratke earn
a win over Alexander Morris and Adam Pizow, 8-1. QC rebounded
as the combination of Younes Hidass and Christopher Baron ttok
their match, 8-3, over Aleksandar Grabovac and Simon
Andersson. The final point up for grabs in doubles went to
the duo of Miguel Uzcategui and Ike Kiro, whom defeated Nikolaj
Wulff and Andre Pellegrino, 8-2.
The Knights took control of the match in singles play, making up
the one-point deficit and winning four of the five completed
matches. Andersson opened by defeating Pellegrino, 6-0, 6-1,
giving the Firebirds a seemingly insurmountable, 3-1 lead.
However Pizow beat Bratke, 6-4, 6-2 to get QC within one, and the
two teams got level when Hidass defeated the ECC Player of the
Year, Grabovac, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Queens took a 4-3 lead when Wulff beat Kiro, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Knights were able to put the match away when Morris defeated
Quiroga 7-5, 6-3. The final match, between Baron and
Uzcategui was incomplete, due to Morris’ victory.
With the win, the Knights advance and will face Concordia.
The match is scheduled for 12:00 PM, on Monday, April 29, from
Queens College.
