Central Islip, N.Y. – Seniors Tyrone
Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) and Attila Toth (Budapest,
Hungary) from Queens College, have been named the 2012 East Coast
Conference Men’s Tennis Co-Players of the Year, as voted on
by the league’s coaches. New York Institute of
Technology freshman Pedro Peixoto (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was
selected Rookie of the Year.
Ewels, currently the No. 44 ranked singles player in the country,
put together an outstanding senior campaign. He boasts a 16-3
record in singles play with the majority of his matches at the No.
2 flight. He also went undefeated in ECC play and also finished
with a perfect mark against regionally and nationally ranked
opponents. Ewels was just as dominant in doubles action, teaming
with Claudio Andrade to post a 24-3 record.
For the second straight season Toth has earned a share of the
conference’s top honor. In 21 matches on the year, Toth has
compiled a 15-6 record including a 2-0 mark against conference
opponents in the No. 1 spot. Toth, who is the No. 15 ranked
singles player in the Division II Campbell’s/ITA rankings,
has also excelled in doubles play. Toth and Nikolaj Wulff teamed up
to post a 25-6 doubles record and the No. 12 spot in the national
poll. The pair also was the winner of the ITA East Region Doubles
Championship, earning a spot in the ITA National Small College
Championship.
Peixoto has had an impressive rookie campaign for NYIT. He
currently holds a 17-10 record in singles play, most of which came
at the No. 2 spot, and a 14-10 mark in doubles. Peixoto also was
the ITA East Regional Men’s B Draw runner-up.
Queens head coach, Craig Schwartz, has been selected the Coach of
the Year by his peers. Schwartz guided his squad to a 17-3
overall record this season, including a 4-0 mark against conference
opponents to clinch the ECC regular season title.
