Central Islip, N.Y. – Junior Atilla Toth
(Budapest, Hungary) from Queens College has been named the 2011
East Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, as
voted on by the league’s coaches. University of the
District of Columbia freshman Miguel Uzcategui (Valencia,
Venezuela) was selected Rookie of the Year.
In his first season as a Knight, Toth has compiled a 20-2 record at
the No. 1 singles spot including a 4-0 mark against conference
opponents. Toth, who is the No. 29 ranked singles player in
the Division II Campbell’s/ITA rankings, also knocked off a
pair of top-25 ranked nationally players on the season. He also
teamed recorded a 14-4 overall record in doubles competition and
once again went undefeated in conference play with a 4-0
record.
Uzcategui has had an impressive rookie campaign for UDC. He
boasts a 13-3 record in both third flight singles play and doubles
play as well. Uzcategui also was the ITA East Regional Men’s
B Draw champion in his first season as a Firebird.
UDC head coach, T. Richard “Dickie” Mahaffey, III, has
been selected the Coach of the Year by his peers. Mahaffey
guided his squad to a 12-4 overall record this season, including a
3-1 mark against conference opponents to finish second in the ECC
regular season.
