Old Westbury, N.Y. - The 26th-ranked
Queens College men's tennis team won its second-straight East Coast
Conference championship Thursday morning, as the top-seeded Knights
(17-5) punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II Championships
with a 5-1 triumph over second-seeded District of Columbia
(13-5).
NCAA competition begins with preliminary round matches from May
1-3, and the field will be announced April 26 at 8 p.m. on
ncaa.com.
Queens took two out of three doubles matches to start the morning,
including Atilla Toth and Nikolaj Wulff's 8-4 victory in the No. 1
flight over UDC's Tomas Gajdusek and Bruno Reich. Diego Medrano and
David Burstein held strong at the No. 3 flight as well, capturing
an 8-1 triumph versus the Firebirds' Karlon Bernard and Lalindra
Jayatilleke.
Toth took down Gajdusek by a 6-1, 6-love count at No. 1 singles,
while Burstein (versus Bernard) and Andre Pellegrino (versus
Jayatilleke) won by identical 6-love, 6-love scores in the No. 5
and 6 flights, respectively, to seal the match for head coach Craig
Schwartz's Queens side.
